PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device which can easily actualize cyclic fine polarization inversion structure whose polarity inversion is uniform over a wide range. SOLUTION: This optical device S is constituted by forming a polarization inversion structure 6 having uninverted areas 6a and inverted areas 6c arrayed alternately on a substrate made of a nonlinear ferroelectric body made unipolar and forming a waveguide which crosses the polarization inversion structure 6 as the top surface of the substrate 1. In this case, the differenceΔN between refractive index of the waveguide 2 and the refractive index of the top surface part of the uninverted area 6b is so set that 0.01<=ΔN<=0.13 (whereΔN = refractive index of waveguide - refractive index of top surface of uninverted area).
