PREPARATION OF SULFONATED INORGANIC POWDER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an inorg. powder having sulfonic groups on the surface thereof and an ion-exchange capability by treating the surface of an inorg. powder with a thiol or sulfide group-contg. organosilicon compd, and then treating them with an ozone-contg. gas. SOLUTION: An inorg. powder such as silicon oxide, titanium oxide or aluminum oxide is prepd. pref. by the dry process and subjected to surface treatment with an organosilicon compd. having a thiol group or a sulfide group. The organosilicon compd. is suitably a hydrolyzable organosilane compd. (e.g.γ- mercaptopropylrimethoxysilane) or a silicone (e.g. silicone oil). The surface- treated inorg. powder is then either treated with an ozone-contg. gas or irradiated with ultraviolet rays in an oxygen-contg. gas to obtain an inorg. powder having sulfonic groups on the surface thereof. The inorg. powder is useful as a metal ion adsorbent or immobilizer, an ion exchanger, etc.
