Apparatus for doping silica powder

Equipment for doping silica powder includes holders (4) for silica soot particles, a heater (6) for sintering the particles to granules and the densifying the granules, and a system (7) for supplying the holders with dopant precursor gas during heating. The holders (4) are moved to cause particle motion and exposure of the entire particle surface to the atmosphere containing the precursor gas. Also claimed is similar equipment, in which the silica soot particles are replaced by previously prepared silica granules.
