PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, etc., from an easily available raw material and inexpensive fluorine gas in a high yield. SOLUTION: This compound of formula II is obtained by reacting anα- hydroxymethylene-β-ketoster of formula I (R<1> is a 1-12C alkyl, etc.; R<2> is a 1-12C alkyl, etc.,) with fluorine gas. The reaction is preferably carried out by using the fluorine gas diluted with an inactive gas such as nitrogen gas into a concentration of 1-10% at -50 to 0 deg.C for 0.1 to 10hr. A new compound of formula IV obtained from a compound of formula III (R<5> , R<6> are each H, a 1-12C alkyl, etc.,) by the reaction is useful as a raw material for various kinds of functional materials, etc.
