发明名称 Artificial films
摘要 A solution of one or more highly polymeric linear esters, obtained by heating one or more glycols of the series HO(CH2)nOH, where n is an integer greater than 1 but not greater than 10, with terephthalic acid or an ester-forming derivative thereof, is formed into a thin layer on a smooth surface; substantially all the solvent is evaporated from this layer at a rate sufficiently slow to avoid bubble formation, and the film so formed is stripped from the smooth surface. The polymer may be obtained from ethylene-, tri-, tetra-, hexa- or decamethylene glycol, and terephthalic acid or an ester, acid halide, ammonium, or amine salt thereof. The solvent employed may be o- or m-cresol or other phenol, nitrobenzene, tetrachlorethane, cresylic acid (a mixture of o-, m-and p-cresols), or a mixture of chloroform and m-cresol. The polymer may be converted to an amorphous state by heating it above its melting point, quenching rapidly with cold water, and drying. In this form it is more readily dissolved when making the film-forming solution. The solution is preferably heated to the temperature at which it is desired to remove the solvent, before it is applied to the smooth surface. This surface may be made of steel or other metal or glass. It may be the surface of a continuous band. A coating of a high melting point grease or aluminium stearate may be applied to the smooth surface to aid the stripping of the formed film. Evaporation of the solvent should take place at a temperature well below the boiling point of the solvent, preferably about 30 DEG C. below, except at the end of the operation when the temperature may be raised to about 5 DEG C. below the boiling point to remove residual solvent. The film may be quenched after removal of the solvent in order to avoid brittleness. Quenching may be effected by a blast of cold inert gas or by immersion in a bath of cold inert liquid. The film may be molecularly oriented by drawing, rolling or stamping, preferably both laterally and longitudinally. In an example, polyethylene terephthalate is dissolved in cresylic acid at 190 DEG C. and a small amount of aluminium stearate is added. The hot solution is poured into a large, flat, polished, stainless steel dish, which is floated in a deep trough containing mineral oil at 190 DEG C. A current of nitrogen is passed through the trough which is maintained at 190 DEG C. for 24 hours and then heated to 220 DEG C. for 2 hours. The dish is removed and thrust into cold water. A strip of the clear film obtained is then drawn to five times its original length in a bath of oil at 76 DEG C. The films obtained have high tensile strength, heat stability, resistance to acids, and many organic liquids such as petrol, good dielectric properties, abrasion resistance, and resistance to weathering. They may be used as wrapping materials, clothing, curtains and electric insulating materials. They may be heat sealed.
