PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having a carbon series protective film which has low friction coefficient and is excellent in durability. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium having a supporting body 11, a magnetic film 12 and the protective film 14, the protective film 14 contains C component and F component and Raman spectroscopic spectrum thereof has a broad peak with >=70cm<-1> half-value width in 1550±60cm<-1> region and has a sharp peak with <=60cm<-1> half-value width in 1550±40cm<-1> region.
