PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sheet-like polarizing element with a light scattering function which is a polarizing element for taking out only the unidirectionally polarized light from randomly polarized light without utilizing light absorptive dichromaticity, unlike the conventional polarizing plates, is provided with high light utilization efficiency by converting the randomly polarized light to the polarized light of the one direction alone without light absorption and is free from the thermal deterioration of the polarization characteristics by the absorption and heat generation of a light source and a liquid crystal element using the same. SOLUTION: The slopes 31 of the respective prisms 30 of the prisms 30 continuously worked to superpose alternately on each other to a right angled triangular shape are inclined to attain nearly a Brewster angle with an incident light source 10 to separate the incident randomly polarized light to the P polarized light 11 and the S polarized light 12; thereafter only the S polarized light 12 of the reflected light is converted to the P polarized light 13 via a half-wave plate 40 arranged on the respective prism surfaces parallel with the incident light. The P polarized light 11 which is transmitted and the P polarized light 19 which is converted are respectively taken out and further the P polarized light 11 to 13 are subjected to light scattering by a light scattering sheet 50, by which the linearly polarized light which is polarized in the one direction and has no directivity is taken out of the randomly polarized light without light loss. |
