Combined solid fuel drying and gaseous fuel treatment process

In a process for drying moist, mechanically processed solid fuel intended as raw material for the manufacture of fuel gas by gasification, the raw fuel gas is passed through a layer of the moist solid fuel which acts as a filter and, by virtue of its moisture content, as a cooling medium for the raw gas. Also claimed is a plant for the process having a shaft with a rectangular or square cross section in which the combined process takes place. Charging and discharging devices are provided at the top and bottom of the shaft to permit intermittent or continuous flow of the solid fuel through the shaft. Pairs of inlet and collection chambers are provided for the gaseous fuel. These are separated from the contents of the shaft by walls which permit the passage of gas but not of solid material.
