The system includes a database(16) with a files(18a,18b,18c), each file containing data corresponding to alpha-numeric characters and respectively associated with a number of system references. An input interface(22a,22b) allows a user to enter an alpha-numeric character to search a reference. A processor(20) selects a file of references containing each input character. An output interface(26a,26b) transmits data to the user and invites the user to enter at least a supplementary alpha-numeric character when the selected references is greater than a pre-determined number. The data associated with the selected references when the number of references selected is less than or equal to a pre-determined number is transmitted to the user.
