The method involves a transmitter (A) sending a value from a counter and an authentication code (CMPn) which is derived from the counter value to a receiver (B). A secret key can be used to encrypt the counter value to produce the authentication code. The counter value is incremented for each communication before it is transmitted to the receiver. The receiver verifies the authenticity of the code received by checking that the received counter value is greater than the value received for the previous communication.
