PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To brighten the screen display, to enhance the contrast and to make animation image display possible by specifying the relation between the twist pitch of liquid crystals and an inter-substrate spacing. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device is constituted by disposing a liquid crystal layer consisting of the nematic liquid crystals added with a dichromatic dye between the display side substrate 11 and rear surface side substrate 12, which include electrodes 13, 14 and are arranged face each other, providing the rear surface side substrate 12 which a reflection plate, disposing a quarter-wave plate between the reflection plate and the liquid crystal layer and determining the twist pitch P of the liquid crystals and the inter-substrate spacing (d) so as to satisfy 1/4<=d/p<=3/4. At the time, the angle formed by the orientation axis of the liquid crystals in the rear surface side substrate 12 and the optical axis of the quarter-wave plate is preferably 45 deg.. The reflection plate is a mirror-finished surface reflection plate and the display side substrate 11 is preferably provided with a light diffusion sheet 32. Further, the refractive index anisotropyΔn and twist pitch P of the liquid crystals preferably satisfy 1μm<=Δn.P<=5μm.
