Suspended material is gases is removed by a filter element, mounted in a filter housing, comprising a pack of folded material (1) which is covered by a grid-like protective mask (3), sealed to all clean air-side backs of folds (4). Preferably the mask comprises slotted holes, the maximum width of the slots (5) being the width of the fold openings (6) between the backs. It may be of metallic or non-metallic material and is preferably adhesively bonded to the pack.. A similar protective mask may be provided on the inflow side of the filter.
