A new process for the preparation of alkyl chlorides comprises: (a) reacting a 4-30C saturated mono- or poly-hydric aliphatic primary alcohol, optionally substituted by one or more Cl atoms, and optionally comprising one or more 5-7C cycloalkyl groups, with gaseous HCl, in the absence of a catalyst, at 80-170 degrees C until transformation of OH groups is 60-95 mole %; and (b) introducing phosgene to the reaction medium with a catalyst chosen from hexa-alkyl-guanidinium halides and their halo-hydrates, quat. ammonium halides, quat. phosphonium halides, pyridine or pyridines substituted by one or more 1-6C alkyl groups, at 80-160 degrees C. |
