Producing cam

The method for producing a cam (1) includes: (a) boundary layer hardening the working surface (2) of the cam disc using a hardening process applicable to chosen parts of the workpiece; (b) leaving a gap is left between the start and end points of the hardened section of the cam working surface; (c) producing a cutout (6) corresponding to this gap either before or after the hardening process; and (d) fitting an insert (7) with a hardened working surface and fastening it into this cutout to bridge the gap and thus complete the endless working surface of the cam. Also claimed is the resultant cam (1) comprising a hardened surface (2) which includes an unhardened gap bridged by means of an insert (7) with hardened working surface fitted and fastened into a cutout (6) in the cam.
