PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove chlorine and convert an org. chlorine compd. into a harmless inorg. compd. by allowing the chlorine in the org. chlorine compd. react with calcium oxide, barium oxide or a mixture of the oxides. SOLUTION: The soil contaminated with an org. chlorine compd., the dioxin formed in a refuse incinerator during the incineration and collected, PCB preserved for a long period or an org. chlorine compd. having been stored after use is allowed to react with calcium oxide, barium oxide or a mixture of the oxides at 400-650 deg.C in the air or in an inert gas, hence the chlorine in the org. chlorine compd. is removed, and the compd. is converted to a harmless inorg. compd. The calcium chloride, barium chloride, etc., formed after the reaction are soluble in water. Accordingly, the chlorides are dissolved in water and precipitated as the hydroxides, and the hydroxides are dried, then calcined and reutilized as the oxides. |
