Monocyclic terpenes are used as insect repellents. The terpenes are specifically dihyrocarveol (2-methyl-5-(1-methylethenyl) cyclohexanol) (A), dihydrocarvone (2-methyl-5-(1-methylethyl) cyclohexanone) (B), piperitol (3-methyl-6-(1-methylethyl)-2 -cyclohexen-1-ol) (C), piperitone (3-methyl-6-(1-methylethyl)-2 -cyclohexen-1-one) (D), and isopulegol (5-methyl-2-(1-methylethynyl cyclohexanol) (E) The use of the compounds in formulations repelling flies is partic. claimed. Using 0.1 to 10% soln. partic. in ethanol, pref. with addn. of 5% isopropylmyristate or glycerol is also claimed. Use on a particulate carrier e.g. silica or slaked lime is also claimed. The compounds may also be used with cinnamaldehyde (3-phenyl-2 -propenal). (Provisional Basic previously advised in week 8927) |
