Mild and environmentally benign bis-alkylphenol alkoxylated gemini surfactants of formula (I), wherein R independently represents alkyl, R1 independently represents hydrogen of alkyl, R2 independently represents -SO3M, -P(O)(OM)2, -CH2COOM, -CH2CHOHCH2SO3M, wherein M represents alkali or alkaline earth metal, ammonium or an organic base salt; R3 represents alkylene of from one to about 10 carbon atoms or -C(O)-R4-C(O)- wherein R4represents alkylene or aryl, and -O-R5-O-, wherein R5 represents aliphatic or aromatic moieties; EO represents ethyleneoxy; and a ranges from zero to about 100.
