A can collection apparatus (10) that permits the user to insert empty beverage cans (56), one at a time, into the apparatus (10). The apparatus (10) ascertains whether the article inserted is a valid empty can (56) or is not a valid empty can (56). If it is not a valid empty can (56), the article is dispensed through a discharge chute (122) back to the user. If the article is a valid empty can (56), that empty can (56) is moved to a can crusher (84, 96, 90, 88) where the can (56) is crushed and deposited within a collection area (104). Simultaneously with the moving to the can crusher (84, 96, 90, 88), a computer generated image of rotatable reels (130, 132, 134) are spun, which then are stopped, which display a coupon value for a product or products imprinted on a segment of each reel (130, 132, 134). A coupon value is then to be printed and dispensed (42) to the user corresponding to the displayed coupon value.
