A control unit (6) registers the value of a coin received by the coin checker (2), updates the credit register and diverts tokens to a separate box via a relay. If a token is received the coin return button is ignored by the control unit and no further coins are accepted while the credit counter is above zero. The token box (5) can be removed after operating the key switch (12), the control unit registers the process. A smart card can be introduced into the coin slot and read by a contactless reader which sends the data to the control unit. The code on the smart card is interpreted and displayed as a corresponding currency value. When the smart card counter reaches a predetermined value, further smart cards will not be accepted.
