PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an assist gas generator of a laser beam machine with which appearance and quality are improved by non-oxidizing cutting with gaseous nitrogen, the purity of the gaseous nitrogen is stabilized to stabilize the quality, a running cost is reduced and the cutting is made possible right after the start of the operation of the laser beam machine and a method for controlling the same. SOLUTION: A gaseous nitrogen generator 20 using the air from an air compressor 1 as a raw material, a circuit having a gas concn. detecting means 2 and a gas supply line opening/closing means 3 and a circuit having a gaseous nitrogen cylinder 30 and a gas supply line opening/closing means 31 for the cylinder are disposed in parallel. The gas supply line on the outlet side is connected to a nozzle. The outlet side of the gaseous nitrogen generator 20 is provided with the gas concn. detecting means 2 and a discharge means 4. Further, the device is provided with a controller 12 for opening and closing the gas supply line opening/closing means 31 for the cylinder, the gas supply line opening/closing means 3 and the discharge means 4 and controlling the operation of the laser beam machine in accordance with concn. signals from the gas concn. detecting means 2.
