The installation (1) for assisting a driver includes a display screen (2) and several associated pieces of equipment mounted within the vehicle. These may include a tuner (3), a cassette player (4) and an optical disc player (5) as well as further extensions (6). There may also be a radio-telephone (7) and a receiver picking up road traffic information. There may also be a guidance system and a navigational aide. These may take advantage of a bi-directional link with the road infra-structure and with other vehicles. Information gathered may be displayed on screen, or relayed via a loudspeaker.
