The heater (1) comprises several generally cylindrical modules assembled (4) on a common axis (0). Conical end modules (3) are flange-connected (4) to the intercepted pipe-line, of lesser diameter. Some modules are plain spacers, some have moulded-in electrodes (10,20...), all are of insulating material. Each electrode is e.g. cruciform, with elliptical tubular arms (11,21) fixed on a peripheral ring (13) submerged in the insulating wall (2). Other transverse configurations, e.g. grids, are opt. suitable. Successive electrodes are angularly displaced (angleAOB) to prevent masking and improve mixing. Axial spacing increases in the flow direction, reducing heat input to downstream stages for closer temperature control. DC, or AC 1- or 3-phase, voltage is applied (15,25...) between electrodes, both end electrodes being at earth potential.
