Class 2(5) [Also in Groups VIII and XL(a)] An epoxy resin containing ,as a flexibilizer, the radicals of one or more polyoxalkylene glycols having a chain length which corresponds to a molecular weight of the glycol of at least 200 chemically combined therewith is made by reacting a di- or polyfunctional epoxide with a diglycidyl ether of a polyoxyalkylene glycol or a polyepihalohydrin diepoxide. Specified epoxy resins being those made from aromatic polyhydroxy compounds and epihalohydrins, e.g. condensates of epichlorhydrin with bis-phenol-A and phenol-formaldehyde resins, 3,4-epoxy-6- methylcyclohexylmethyl-3,4-epoxy-6- methylcyclohexane carboxylate, vinyl cyclohexane carboxylate, vinyl cyclohexane dioxide and dicyclopentadiene dioxide. Specified flexibilizers are the diepoxides of polyoxyethylene, polyoxypropylene and polyoxybutylene glycols. The modified epoxy resins are used as adhesives in the preparation of laminates, being hardened in the presence of hardening agents and catalysts, e.g. polyoxyalkylene polyamines, cyanoethylated polyoxyalkylene polyamines, polyakanol polyamines, polybasic acid anhydrides, the boron trifluoride salts of monoethylamine, triethylamine and benzyl diethylamine. In the Examples:-(1) a bis-phenol-A-epichlorohydrin condensate is reacted with a diglycidyl ether of polyoxypropylene glycol, the product being cured with a mixture of monoethanolamine and diethylene triamine; (2) the diglycidyl ethers of bis-phenol-A and polyepichlorhydrin are reacted together and the product cured by diethylene triamine. |
