The apparatus (24) for use in inserting a component (18) into a cross hole (22) in a pipe (10) has a piston element (30). The component generally used is the seal of a boring armature. The piston element can slide axially and acts on the seal to be inserted. The piston element has a surface for equalising the pressure on the seal. Channels (54,56,58,60) are provided in the surface to ensure the pipe internal pressure acts on the piston surface.
