A process is disclosed for regulating the states of operation of a retarder (25) in a vehicle having a gas pedal (5) and a brake pedal (13). At least one gas pedal signal (7) and/or brake pedal signal (9, 11) are recorded. The invention is characterised in that a predetermined state of operation of the retarder is regulated depending on the at least one recorded gas pedal and/or brake pedal signal.
