PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type magnetic recording medium that high packing density recording can be conducted and the durability is high. SOLUTION: The recording medium mainly contains ferromagnetic metal powder and binder having the length of a long axis of 0.01 to 0.1μm and contains lubricant on a nonmagnetic support. In this case, the surface roughness (Ra) of the magnetic layer is 5nm or less. The ratio of the lubricant occupying the surface of the layer is 20 to 60%, and its mean thickness is 1 to 10nm.
