The invention pertains to a device for filling a restraint device, in particular an impact cushion (airbag) for protecting vehicle occupants. The device has the following features: the restraint device is filled with an inert gas or mixture of gases stored in a pressurised container (300); the pressurised container (300) is provided with an outlet aperture (310) closed off by a bursting membrane (311); the outlet aperture (310) is provided with a module (100) for opening the membrane (311); the module (100) is provided with a detonation device (110); the detonator jacket (115) is enclosed in a toroidal propellant chamber (119); to ignite the propellant (121) contained in the propellant chamber (119), the detonator jacket (115) is provided, in addition to axial nozzles, with further nozzles (116) which project radially outwards; and lastly, flow elements (123) are provided to direct the hot gas produced by the propellant (121) onto the membrane (311).
