The multi-cylinder internal combustion engine is constructed with a cylinder block (2). The engine is fitted with a cylinder head (3) above the block and with a oil sump case (4) below the block. The sump case is modified in shape to allow room for the catalytic pot to fit beneath a section of the sump case. The exhaust gas outlets (8) in the cylinder head are connected to the exhaust system. The exhaust system consists of an exhaust manifold (10) connected to an exhaust pipe (11), which is fitted with a catalytic pot (13). The catalytic pot is fitted so as to extend directly beneath the oil sump case and is arranged transversely, relative to the longitudinal axis of the engine.
