An ink cartridge (1,Fig.2) and an ink cartridge identifying apparatus are disclosed, wherein the ink cartridge (1,Fig.2) comprises an ink container (2,Fig.2) and a lid (3,Fig.2) being attached to the top of the ink container (2,Fig.2), a projected and recessed pattern portion (4,Fig.2) being formed on an outer surface of the lid (3,Fig.2) and a first electrode portion (5,Fig.2) being arranged on the projected and recessed pattern portion (4,Fig.2). The first electrode portion (5,Fig.2) is positioned to be selectively engageable with a second electrode portion (122,Fig.2), which is arranged on a pattern matching portion (121,Fig.2) formed on a press frame (120,Fig.2) hingedly mounted to a printer body (100,Fig.2) via a hinge (140,Fig.2). The ink cartridge (1,Fig.1) maybe inserted into a receiving slot (110,Fig.2) of the printer body (100,Fig.2) and since the first and second electrode portions (5,122,Fig.2) are arranged to be selectively engageable an electric circuit (130,Fig.2A) is closed and a display lamp (132,Fig.2A) is illuminated thus confirming that an ink cartridge appropriate to the receiving slot (110,Fig.2) of the printer body (100,Fig.2) has been loaded. The recessed pattern portion (4,Fig.2) and the pattern matching portion (121,Fig.2) may be shaped into characters/symbols, graphics or the like (See Figs 4 & 5).
