PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the stress given to a circuit element, enhance the circuit efficiency, and establish stable lighting of an electrodeless discharge lamp. SOLUTION: An AC power Vac is passed through a switch SW and is rectified and smoothened by a rectifier DB and electrolytic capacitor Co so as to generate a DC voltage E, which is converted into an AC high frequency power by a self-exciting inverter circuit INV1 of half bridge type consisting of switching elements Q1 , Q2 , and power supplying is made to an electrodeless discharge lamp La through a resonator circuit 1, capacitor C4 , resistance R3, and induction coil 3. The inverter circuit INV1 is started by feeding starting pulse Vp from a starter circuit 4e to the control end of the switching element Q2. Therein the relation Tp≈T/2 should be met, where T is the operating period of the inverter circuit INV1 and Tp is pulse width of starting pulse Vp.
