The synchronous machine has energising poles (2) having a ferromagnetic core carrying an energising winding (9) and provided with permanent magnets (7) at the outer periphery. The ferromagnetic core extends as far as the air-gap (6) between the rotor (1) and the stator (5) at the centre of each energising pole. The permanent magnets are positioned on either side of the central section of the ferromagnetic core. They have a polarity which corresponds to the polarity of the energising pole.
