PURPOSE: To immediately and accurately measure flow rate by using a dam type flowmeter having a dam and a water level detection means by arranging a plurality of penetration holes that penetrate the dam in the water level direction at different intervals thereby linearizing the relation ship between water level on the upstream side from the dam and a flow rate. CONSTITUTION: The dam type flowmeter 1 consists of a measuring dam 7 wherein a plurality of penetration holes 8 are provided in a water level direction at different intervals and a water level detection means (ultrasonic wave type displacement meter) 9 that detects a water level of the dam 7. The plurality of penetration holes 8 are provided at different intervals in accordance with an equation of hi=h'×i<2> and linearize the relationship between the water level (h) of the dam and a flow rate Q. In the equation, (hi) designates distance from a reference face to the (i)-th penetration hole and (h') designates distance from the reference face to the first penetration hole (initial value). The relationship between the water level (h) flow rate Q becomes linear and complex correction is not needed after the detection of the water level (h) so that the flow rate Q can be immediately and accurately measured. In the case where the measurement of the flow rate is executed by visual observation on a site, it is possible to directly measure the flow rate with high accuracy enough in practical use.
