The comminution of brittle material, in particular, foundry sand is carried out between two rotating rolls pressed against one another, according to which a part of the milled material agglomerated into lumps is returned into the mill, and is fed into the roll gap together with fresh material. The the grain size distribution of the resultant milled material is brought to the desired value by adjustment of the amount and moisture content of the material returned into the roll gap.
