PURPOSE: To enhance transparency and the abrasion and scratching resistances of a magnetic head by containing at least one kind of Al2 O3 selected from crystal structure (κ,χ,η,ρ,β,θ,δ, andγ) in the transparent magnetic recording layer. CONSTITUTION: The alumina (Al2 O3 ) having one of the crystal structures (κ,χ,η,ρ,β,θ,δ, andγ) is superior toα-alumina in the abrasion resistance of the magnetic head, because it is lower in the Mohs' hardness than that of theα-alumina, and the crystal structures (κ,χ,η,ρ,β,θ, andγ) are preferable, and those (βandθ) is the best. The average particle diameter of the alumina to be added is 1-200nm, and, when <1nm, the scratch resistance deteriorates, and when >200nm, transparency drops, and 1-100nm is preferable. An amount of the alumina to be added is, preferably, 10-500mg/m<2> , and when <10mg/m<2> , its effect is lost, and when >500mg/m<2> , transparency drops.
