PURPOSE: To prevent missing of image such as a thin line or small points by extracting a maximum value of image data in a picture element from a scanner displaying interleaved image data converted and stored in a memory in a way of multi-value so as to improve the gradation of a monitor display image. CONSTITUTION: An image processing section 102 applies prescribed image correction and edit processing to image data obtained by reading an original optically and records the result on recording paper by a printer 103. A conversion section 105 of a display processing section 104 extracts a maximum value of 4×4 picture elements from an image in 400dpi from the scanner 101 to generate an interleaved image A in 100dpi. Simultaneously the control section 105 extracts one picture element for each of three picture elements and for each of three lines of the image A to generate an interleaved image B in 33dpi and stores the image B to a memory 106 together with the image A. When the operator displays an image over a wide range of the original, the image B is displayed and when the operator desires magnification, the image A is displayed on a display panel 107 in a way of multi-value processing from the memory 106. Thus, the gradation of the display image on the panel 107 is improved and missing of an image such as a thin line or small points is avoided.
