The communication system includes a master station (21) which communicates with a number of slave stations over a frequency band. Each of the slave stations includes a first device which selectively provides a speech signal and image signal, with the input signal converted into a coded slave signal. The coded slave signal is detected and it is determined if it corresponds to the slave speech signal, with the detection device producing a second signal when the detected slave signal corresponds to the slave image signal. A second slave device responds to the first slave detection signal by compressing the coded slave signal. A third slave device responds to the first detection signal by generating a communication signal corresponding to the compressed slave signal. The slave signal generator responds to the second detection signal by generating the communication signal conforming to the coded signal.
