PURPOSE: To improve brightness without increasing the number of times of applying discharge holding voltage. CONSTITUTION: When discharge holding voltage Vs being lower than discharge start voltage Vf is alternately applied to a pair of display electrodes X and Y coated by a dielectric layer, and discharge is periodically caused by utilizing wall voltage Vwall by accumulated electric charges of the dielectric layer, immediately after of a conduction period TS1 in which discharge holding voltage Vs is applied, a conduction suspension period TS2 in which potentials of both display electrodes X and Y are made a ground potential is provided, the dielectric layer is electrified so that the wall voltage Vwall becomes more than discharge start voltage Vf in the conduction period TS1, and self-discharge is caused by wall voltage Vwall in the conduction suspension period TS2.
