The firelighter, for solid or liq. fuel, contains an ignition compsn. treated, if appropriate, with a substance of low ignition point. The composition is portioned out and given a durable, fully-sealed encapsulation of a sheet material which burns freely, leaving no residues. Also claimed are: (i) a method of igniting a solid or liq. fuel using the firelighter by distributing individual pouches in or near a quantity of fuel, and using a lighter or match to start the fire which consumes both compsn. and wrapping; and (ii) a method of mfg. the firelighter, in which the semi-fluid paste compsn. is deposited in small quantities, spaced apart on a sheet; the sheet is folded over; and the pouches are sealed by welding and then separated.
