The franking machine has an ink jet print head (10) to form a multicolour image on the surface of an envelope (12) that is carried beneath the head on a conveyor (11). The letter is then carried to a blotter, positioned immediately beyond the print head. The blotter has a roller (20) with a blotting surface that runs over the letter as it passes. The roller is carried on a pivoted arm (5), which can be displaced to move the envelope onto a stacking machine. The roller can have a paper sleeve that is manually adjusted, or a strip of blotting paper that is delivered from a supply roll. In this case passage of each envelope triggers advance of the supply roll, either electrically or by means of a spring. |
