Compounds of the formula: Ar-L-(*)m in which Ar represents a substantially planar, fused ring system which contains at least 4 aromatic rings and which is of formula (I) wherein: n is 0 or 1; 0 means that the surrounding ring is aromatic when n is 1 and non-aromatic when n is 0; p is 0 or 1; and p is 0 when n is 0; R1 and R2, on the one hand, and R3 and R4, on the other hand, are chosen so that each forms a fused aromatic ring system together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached; R' is an alkyl group or hydrogen; and R5 is a group which, together with the atoms to which it is attached, forms one or more supplementary rings; L is a stable chain having at least two atoms in which the atoms are independently selected from carbon, oxygen, sulphur, nitrogen and phosphorus, where appropriate the chain atoms being optionally substituted by one or more C1-6 alkyl groups which may be the same or different, one or more chain atoms forming part of one or more aromatic or heteroaromatic groups and where a carbon is adjacent to a nitrogen atom the carbon atom being optionally substituted by an oxygen atom; and * is a radical with at least one chiral centre; and m is 1, 2 or 3; with the proviso that when * is a peptide or naturally occuring amino acid then the two chain atoms nearest the group Ar are carbon atoms. Kits for separating enantiomers comprising them; and processes for the separation of enantiomers using them are disclosed. |
