A process for producing a carbonaceous material having an excellent electrostatic capacity and being suitable as a carbon electrode for electric double-layer capacitors in a high yield, which process comprises the step of halogenating carbonized coal by contact with a halogen gas to yield halogenated carbonized coal and the step of dehalogenating the halogenated coal to eliminate part or all of the halogen atoms therefrom. It is possible to prepare a carbonaceous material for electric double-layer capacitors having a desirable configuration and a large electrostatic capacity in rapid discharge, when the halogenation step is preceded by the step of molding the carbonized coal after crushing the same and adding thereto a binder and the step of forming a carbide from the molded coal by heating the same in an inert gas atmosphere.
