PURPOSE: To obtain the silver halide photographic material capable of obtaining an extremely high-contrast photographic performance exceeding aγvalue of 10 by using a stable developing solution or the direct positive photographic material exhibiting sufficient reversibility even in the case of using a processing solution low in pH. CONSTITUTION: This photographic material contains a bydrazide compound represented by the following formula: X1 -(R3 )m3 -(L2 -R2 )m2 -L1 -Ar-NHNH-CO-R1 in which R1 is a di- or mono-fluoromethyl groups; Ar is a divalent aromatic group; each of L1 and L2 is a divalent bonding group; each of R2 and R3 is a divalent aliphatic or aromatic group; each of m2 and m3 is, independently, 0 or 1; X1 is an alkylthio, arylthio, heterocyclic thio, quaternary ammonium, quaternary ammonium-containing heterocyclic, ethylenoxy- or propylenoxy- containing alkoxy group or a saturated heterocyclic group having a sulfide or disulfide group.
