METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR RECEPTION COMMON TO HIGHLY SHARP TVAND NTSC USING SYMBOL TIMING RESTORATION AND SYNCHRONIZING SIGNAL DETECTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an inexpensive common receiver for an HDTV signal and an NTSC signal with high identification performance by discriminating both the signals based on a symbol timing restored from the HDTV signal in itself and a synchronizing signal detected from the received NTSC signal. SOLUTION: A tuner 1 receives either of UHF/VHF broadcast signals and converts the received signal into an intermediate frequency signal. A horizontal/ vertical synchronizing signal detector 5 detects a synchronizing signal of an NTSC signal from an output signal of the intermediate frequency amplifier 4. An output signal of the intermediate frequency amplifier 4 is given to a low pass filter 10 to eliminate an undesired frequency component. An A/D converter 11 samples a base band HDTV signal outputted from the low pass filter 10 under the control of a symbol timing restoration device 13. A mode control section 14 connecting to an output terminal of the synchronizing signal detector 5 and the symbol timing restoration device 13 discriminates the HDTV mode or the NTSC mode.
