The apparatus and method senses the quantity of dishes while washing and drying them, and varying the washing and drying conditions based on the sensed quantity. The apparatus includes: a heater(4) increasing the temperature within a washing chamber(1); a blowing motor(3) regulating the temperature; a temperature sensor(2) sensing the temperature within the chamber for determining the quantity of dishes. The method comprises the steps of regulating the temperature within the chamber(1) by blowing a cool air; increasing the temperature by heating and blowing the air; adjusting the cleaning conditions.
