Densification of wood comprises impregnating the wood, with the aid of an aqueous solution of melamine-formalin resin. The impregnated wood is then compressed, in order to reduce its volume and to produce a polymerisation of the resin and then to dry the wood. The process has an intermediate stage between the impregnation and the compression. This intermediate stage consists of a pre-drying phase, for example in an oven, in order to reduce by a significant amount, the water left in the wood as a result of the impregnation. This water content has the effect of delaying the polymerisation of the resins
