Accessories drive for IC engine

The drive belt for the accessories eg. water pump, generator etc. has a tension damper comprising a tension wheel on a swivel mounting. The mounting (20) is tensioned by a hydraulic unit (24) with a closed circuit hydraulic system using magneto-rheologic fluid. A valve (44) through a control coil (46) has a flow restriction variable in magnitude and direction. A processor control varies the damping w.r.t. the engine dynamics. For normal damping control the flow restriction provides a hard resistance against slackening of the belt tension and a low resistance to increasing the belt tension. A low drive position is also possible with low resistance in both directions.
