The aid to formula handling stores the formula in digital form and displays the formula along with a grid to allow entry of numeric values corresponding to terms in the formula. An application program sends the formula characters, in the form of a grid, to the display program and the data capture program. The display and data capture programs establish a correspondence rule between each character in the formula grid and each term in the formula. The correspondence rule is defined so it allows protection, modification and restoration of parts of the formula during display, insertion, modification and/or suppression of characters in the grid. The grid can be part filled with previously stored information.
