The invention relates to an apparatus for sorting objects, particularly letters, having different destinations. The apparatus comprises n sorting machines (Mi) connected to a common conveyor (10). Each machine has bins (30 to 36) corresponding to pi of the N possible destinations. The objects introduced through the entrance (12) to the machine (M1) and not corresponding to one of the pi destinations are directed to the holding zones (M'2 to M'5), each zone corresponding to the destinations corresponding to the n-1 other sorting machines (M2 to M5) to which the objects are periodically transferred.
