Surface treating engine Al alloy cylinder running surfaces

The running surfaces of cylinders of an IC engine, comprising an Al alloy with embedded Si particles, are surface treated by removing matrix material by high-pressure water jet to leave the Si particles projecting slightly above the surface. Individual areas of the surfaces may be treated with different intensities. Pref., a high pressure water jet nozzle is moved in a helical path along the surface.
