The household post box has a cover 1 that has a matrix of photodiodes 2 that transmit light 3 to be received by a corresponding matrix of photo receivers 5 mounted in the base 4. The photo receivers are connected to an electronic unit that activates an indicator in the house when post is present. Entry of any post in the box interrupts one or more of the beams to activate the indicator.
